Training For Future Proofing

If management and operations within your Organisation are performed by robots, you may want to skip this article, or can you? What about the people who program the robots, service them, monitor them etc.  So, How can we achieve Training For Future Proofing?

Let’s face it,  humans are at the core of every business and this brings challenges plus rewards. Challenges, because we make mistakes and rewards in the sense that we are all uniquely gifted, talented and creative.

Mistakes can range in scale, nature and consequences. Albeit Alexander Pope said “to err is human; but to forgive is divine” it might be difficult to forgive when countless lives are lost or businesses ruined, due to complacency. Just ask a random sample of the 80M plus people who were victims of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

So, how can we minimise “human error?”

Imagine that you had to change a faulty electrical plug on an item and you’ve never done this before.

Right off the bat, you thought “electrics” and that triggered an alarm bell or red light for danger.

OK, you then have some Options as follows:

  • Phone a friend or call in an expert.
  • Research on “how to” by using Google, watch endless YouTube Videos etc.
  • Just replace with an exact same model (note the use of the words “exact same model” – I have another article on this).
  • Just don’t bother and wait till it really breaks down. Oh, and let’s keep a fire extinguisher handy.

I am sure there are likely to be other Options, but let’s just stick with the above for now…

As you may have noticed, each Option carries a level of risk. The objective (in the real world) is not only to find the least costly approach, but also one with the lowest level of “acceptable” risk.

At this stage, Option 2 (research and learn) looks like the lowest cost and it offers future return potential. Perhaps you have a hundred plugs?  Now, Option 2 really does appear to be very appealing….saving money and future proofing. Wow!

Some facts:

  • We know and accept that things do go wrong.
  • We also know that we can intervene if we knew how to i.e. if we had the training and knowledge specifically related to the issue we are trying to solve or manage.

With the correct training, we are in a much better position to carry out the task(s) and also in a much better position with regard to risk exposure. Training for future proofing really does help and adds value to the Organisation.

In a nutshell:

  • By providing individuals with the appropriate knowledge and skills we facilitate achieving a lower risk exposure potential; and
  • We recognise and accept that training for future proofing is a critical organisational function where humans are involved.

On a final note:

In this article, my intention was to articulate the importance of Training For Future Proofing.  There are of course many other factors that can contribute towards risk management (e.g., task-based risk assessment, individual competency etc). Rather than “boil the ocean”, I will cover those in separate articles.
